Diary of a trooper in the 1st New Hampshire Cavalry (previously the 3rd New Hampshire Infantry Regiment (1861-1865), then the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry (1861-1864), describing life in camp and service in the field. Ayer was stationed at Pawtucket, R.I., near Washington, D.C., and at various places in Virginia. There is a brief mention of the battle of Shiloh and the death of General Albert S. Johnston and comments on the battle of Cedar Mountain, the second battle of Manassas, and the battle of Fredericksburg.
